The 2007 NASA Pro Racing season opened at California Speedway in March. Derrick Malcolm hit the super speedway at maximum velocity in his No.92 Nissan Sentra SE-R in the NASA Performance Touring Series (PTD). The track is a reasonably flat road course with street course turns in the infield. At the oval cars hit their highest speeds before breaking down to 2nd gear leading back onto the infield.

Malcolm said he was more than ready to begin his second year of a full racing schedule. The 2006 NASA Rookie of the year qualified 10 out of 62 on Saturday. “I was about three-quarters of a car length behind the winner of the class,” said Malcolm. “I finished 7th overall and 2nd in my class. My best lap time during the race was 159.5 on Saturday. On Sunday I had the class win.”

Malcolm is a veteran High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) driver and made his debut in SE-R Cup racing last year. The Yorba Linda, California resident took 2nd place in the 2006 NASA SE-R Cup.

NASA is an amateur racing program which covers a variety of motorsport driving events. The nationwide organization was founded in 1991 and has more than 10,000 members in 15 chapters across the United States. Malcolm participates in the southern California chapter.


Malcolm is the points leader in his class at this time. “Last year the rules were based on a power to weight ratio. This year everything is performance based. I use K&N Engineering Air and Oil Filters for more horsepower.”

Malcolm’s next race will take place in April at Buttonwillow Raceway Park.
